FORWARD by Jason Zandri

I am sure to get the questions along the lines of “what prompted you to give away the first few chapters of all your titles, including your current work in progress?” (“I, Hero: Phases” at the time of this writing, December of 2015).

“Another Sunset” released one year ago (November of 2014) and while I have been working on additional books throughout 2015, I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to market the released ones and get my name out there.

On my blog, THE GUNDERSTONE REVIEW, as well as via my author page on Facebook, I have been publishing excerpts of my books anyway. For the most part, the chapters released in this e-book have already been released there.

What I wanted was a better way to introduce more readers to all of the different titles and genres I was writing and this made sense to me; offer a former title of mine, in its own right, and then all the excerpts gathered in one release.

I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I did writing them.

BOOK REVIEW – “Children Who Never Grow Old” by Kathy Golden

Children Who Never Grow OldChildren Who Never Grow Old by Kathy Golden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Three short tales containing an element of the supernatural.

FOUR STARS * * * *

Children Who Never Grow Old is a short, 15 page read of three stories: Little Mirrors, Tiffany’s Escapes, and Protected.

Two are about the loss of a child from a familial context. The other is about predator, prey, and a magical protector.

All are very tightly written (as short as they are) and they are very well done works for such condensed efforts.

Each story quickly sets the scene and delivers the full tale – again, very impressively done with such short stories.

For me, the only thing I had trouble with was making a connection to the characters (which is a personal preference of mine when I read). Having said that, it doesn’t take away from any of the tales.

I recommend “Children Who Never Grow Old” by Kathy Golden – * * * * Four Stars (out of five)

BOOK REVIEW – Makai King (Makai Series Book 2) by Tara Fairfield

Makai King (Makai Series Book 2)Makai King by Tara Fairfield

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Undersea fantasy adventure where sins of man and nature collide.

FOUR STARS * * * *

As a member of the Rave Reviews Book Club, this book came to us as a recommended read during our weekly PUSHTUESDAY event. I preface this because I had not read book one prior and I feel there are parts of the story that I had less of a connection to because of that (but it still works well referencing back at points – I do wish there was just a little more of it). My review is based on the story’s self-containment in this book (book two).

I also want to preface that this is not my standard reading choice – the story is more geared to young adults and / or Christian and Religious Fiction readers but I did want to read it both because it came recommended by my peers and I am trying to broaden my reading base.

The story contains some real world problems (life, faith, family, strife, envy, pride, responsibility, etc.) wrapped up in a fantasy undersea world.

It was well written. It was rich in description and it allowed the characters to develop (and I presume “grow” and / or mature more from book one) and evolve into their own strong personas. The overarching message in the story was one of “classic” right versus wrong / good versus evil and the personal responsibility and commitment of will by the main characters (Tessa and Kupua) to see their beliefs and responsibilities through, without losing themselves and remaining true to their own nature.

I recommend “Makai King (Makai Series Book 2)” by Tara Fairfield – * * * * Four Stars (out of five)
